Children’s dental health is essential to their well-being. Unfortunately, some people still lack access to dental care. We believe that good dental care is a universal requirement for all Canadian children. While we do our part to meet those needs, we can only do so much as a private dental practice.

That is why we are so thrilled to announce that the Canada Dental Benefit is now available. It is a program that helps lower dental costs for eligible families.

Are you qualified for the Canada Dental Benefit?

Families earning less than $90,000 annually are eligible for the Canada Dental Benefit. Any parent or guardian can apply if the child receiving the dental care is under 12 years old and is not covered by a private dental insurance plan.

To qualify for the benefit, you must also file last year’s income tax and benefit returns. You will also be required to provide information on the most recent oral health care visit for which the benefit would be used, as well as information about the oral health care provider.

How much coverage do you receive?

If you meet the eligibility requirements outlined above, you can expect to receive up to $650 in tax-free dental benefits for each child under the age of 12 for two years. This number is subject to your adjusted net income.

  • If the family’s adjusted net income is less than $70,000, you will receive $650 for every eligible child.
  • If the family’s adjusted net income is between $70,000 – $79,999, you will receive $390 for every eligible child.
  • If the family’s adjusted net income is between $80,000 – $89,999, you will receive $260 for every eligible child.

What types of dental care are covered?

Another advantage of CDB is that it can be used for any type of dental care provided by a regulated oral health professional who is licensed to practice in the location where the care is provided. That means your kid will get access to a wide range of dental services to help them stay on top of their oral health.

When can you apply for benefits?

Applications opened for the interim Canada Dental Benefit on December 1, 2022. The first benefit period will cover dental care expenses incurred between October 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023. For the second benefit period, applications will be opened on July 1, 2023.

How can you apply for the Canada Dental Benefit?

Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) My Account will be the quickest, easiest and most secure way to apply for the Canada Dental Benefit. If you don’t yet have a CRA My Account, you can register at: canada.ca/my-cra-account

If you are unable to apply for the Canada Dental Benefit online, please contact 1-800-715-8836 to begin your application. You must provide information about your child’s dental care visit, such as the name of your child’s dental care provider(s) and your employer information. You must also have your Social Insurance Number, address, date of birth, and a copy of your last year’s income tax return.

After your application, you can expect to receive your payment within five business days if you apply online and are signed up for CRA direct deposit.

The Canada Dental Benefit is a helpful benefit for families who cannot afford regular dental care. If you meet the eligibility criteria outlined above, we encourage you to take advantage of this program and help keep your child’s oral health in optimal shape. It’s quick, easy, and secure to apply for the benefit online.
